NFL Thanksgiving 2026

By late November, the NFL season is roughly two-thirds of the way through, with NFL Thanksgiving games serving as the unofficial start to the December playoff push. These holiday matchups can have a major impact on playoff positioning as teams enter the final stretch of the regular season and the margin for error begins to dwindle.

Thanksgiving week begins with Green Bay visiting Los Angeles, followed by traditional holiday games in Detroit and Dallas. The battles between individual players will add an extra layer of meaning to these three games as these teams enter the heart of the season.

Thanksgiving Eve: Green Bay Packers at LA Rams

The two passing attacks meet in Wednesday night’s matchup in Inglewood. For Jordan Love and the Packers’ offense, a tough Rams secondary with Trent McDuffie, will pose a challenge. Meanwhile, Matthew Stafford will look to Puka Nacua to disrupt Green Bay’s secondary. The match-up will provide an interesting insight into several key playoff battles.

Jordan Love (QB) vs Trent McDuffie (CB)

Jordan Love is at his best when defenses struggle to identify where the football is going next. Green Bay’s collection of young receivers gives him options, and he’s comfortable spreading targets rather than leaning heavily on one player.

Trent McDuffie complicates that approach. The Rams’ high-profile defensive addition reads developing plays exceptionally well and rarely gives receivers much freedom after the catch. Those qualities could disrupt Green Bay’s preferred passing rhythm.

When examining NFL Thanksgiving player props, Love’s passing opportunities deserve attention alongside McDuffie’s coverage assignments. Accurate placement matters, especially when throwing into narrow windows. Love can’t afford careless decisions against a defender who anticipates routes so effectively.

Puka Nacua (WR) vs Jaire Alexander (CB)

Puka Nacua doesn’t make receiving look particularly delicate. He attacks contested catches, absorbs contact and frequently turns difficult throws into productive gains. Matthew Stafford knows exactly what he offers.

Jaire Alexander brings a similarly confrontational approach to coverage. He challenges receivers early, contests routes aggressively and rarely makes separation comfortable.

That could encourage Stafford to move Nacua around the formation. Working from the slot or attacking different coverage looks would help create cleaner releases.

The interesting part is what happens immediately after the snap. If Alexander disrupts Nacua’s timing, Stafford may need alternative targets. Give Nacua space, though, and those familiar completions across the middle could become a recurring problem.

Thanksgiving Day (Early): Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions

It’s another NFC North contest, and up against his former team in Chicago will be Bears coach Ben Johnson.

The Lions are looking to achieve success this season after a disappointing run in 2025, and will be hoping to spark a playoff drive against a team that is making waves this season. Detroit’s offence offers up a number of different looks to test a defense, with their short pass and screen game providing particularly testing scenarios.

Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR) vs Kyler Gordon (Slot CB)

Amon-Ra St. Brown has never needed spectacular catches to dominate a game. Much of his effectiveness comes from smaller details: reading leverage, adjusting routes and finding just enough space for Jared Goff to deliver.

Chicago’s Kyler Gordon understands how dangerous those seemingly ordinary completions can become. His assignment involves disrupting St. Brown’s timing without surrendering easy openings underneath.

That’s easier said than done. St. Brown changes direction sharply and rarely wastes movement, making him particularly troublesome on third down. Gordon needs to challenge him early. Otherwise, Detroit could spend much of the afternoon moving the chains through short, controlled possessions.

Jahmyr Gibbs (RB) vs Tremaine Edmunds (LB)

There are few comfortable ways to defend against Jahmyr Gibbs once he finds open grass. His acceleration turns routine carries into substantial gains, while his receiving ability gives Detroit another way to stretch defenses horizontally.

Tremaine Edmunds has the athletic range to follow him. The challenge is recognising developing plays quickly enough to make that range count. Screens are particularly demanding. Edmunds must identify the play, navigate blockers and close the distance before Gibbs reaches full speed.

One missed assignment could change the complexion of a possession. Chicago needs disciplined pursuit rather than desperate recovery tackles. Gibbs is simply too dangerous when defenders arrive a moment late.

Thanksgiving Day (Afternoon): Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys

The Eagles and Cowboys face off again on Thanksgiving. Philadelphia’s receiving corps looks to test the Cowboys secondary and provide Jalen Hurts with some comfort after a premature end to his season.

Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb look to exploit a defense that can blow up a pass play before it develops. The challenge is beating one of the better franchises in football.

A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith (WRs) vs Dallas’ Secondary

Philadelphia presents defenders with two very different problems. A.J. Brown uses strength and positioning to win difficult catches. DeVonta Smith prefers precision, creating separation through subtle changes of speed and direction.

Dallas must prepare for both. Trevon Diggs’ anticipation and ability to attack the football could prove important, particularly when Jalen Hurts challenges tight coverage. Brown can turn contested throws into completions even when defenders appear well positioned. Smith is harder to track because his routes rarely unfold exactly as expected.

For Dallas, patience matters. Overcommitting to either receiver could expose space elsewhere, leaving Hurts with easier decisions. Philadelphia will be looking for those moments.

CeeDee Lamb (WR) vs Philadelphia’s Cornerbacks

CeeDee Lamb gives Dak Prescott something every quarterback appreciates: a receiver who can make difficult situations manageable. His route running creates openings, while his body control allows him to adjust when throws aren’t perfect.

Philadelphia’s Quinyon Mitchell won’t make those opportunities easy. His recovery speed and disciplined coverage can frustrate receivers who depend on winning separation along the boundary.

Prescott may look for quick completions to limit Philadelphia’s pass rush. Lamb is particularly effective in those situations, finding openings before defenders can react.

The deeper throws present another challenge. Dallas needs protection to hold long enough for routes to develop. Without it, even Lamb’s ability to make contested catches has its limits.

The Battles Behind the Holiday Headlines

While Thanksgiving games may not determine a team’s identity, they can have significant meaning for teams battling for a spot in December’s playoffs.

Individual matchups will decide the games with big implications. Love must find ways to attack McDuffie. Gibbs will look to test the Chicago athletic pursuit. Dallas will have to account for all of Philadelphia’s receiving threats.

All of these individual battles could greatly affect possession, field position and ultimately how coaches decide to deploy their teams in each of these grueling games.
